Weighing higher education in the budget balancing act - DOROTHY LELAND, Macon Telegraph
During the past week, it has appeared that public higher education might become the vehicle for carrying the weight of this budgetary shortfall, although there is now some indication that compromise might be in the air. Failure to continue down that compromise path is a dangerous road to take. Higher education is the engine that feeds economic growth. In fiscal year 2008, the University System of Georgia provided a $12.1 billion (yes, that’s billion with a “b”) impact on the state of Georgia’s economy. And that’s only measuring the impact of the dollars it spent that year — it’s not including the impact of its graduates as they enter the work force and make contributions to keeping companies solvent and profitable.
