Recession drove deals in online learning education in 2009 - Mary Kathleen Flynn, The Deal
Double-digit unemployment fueled the need for people to sharpen their skills this year. Education in general benefited from the trend, with post-secondary education and online learning in particular gaining ground. More education IPOs are expected in the new year. For example, Archipelago Learning Inc., which focuses on kindergarten through 12th grade but has recently begun to retool its digital-learning aids for the post-secondary market, has filed for an IPO. Increased consolidation is also likely, following Blackboard Inc.'s purchase of learning software developer Angel Learning Inc. for about $95 million, net of cash.
