Army uses computer games console to plug basic skills gap - Martin Kornacki, Training Journal Online
The software, entitled Operation Numerika, has already exceeded the Army’s requirements by raising participant’s maths to Level 3 standard and has scooped Epic the Best Use of Mobile Learning award at the E-learning Awards 2009. Alec Keith, Epic's marketing director, said: "This award really is well deserved because it's a great example of learner-led technology, not technology-led learning. “We undertook extensive research into recruits' needs and preferences. Their familiarity with computer game environments and mobile gaming platforms meant mobile learning was ideal.” Following MoD research, which found around 40 per cent of standard entry recruits to the British Army did not have the required numeracy skills, a novel solution had to be found that would engage learners many of who disliked maths.
