Online Learning: Reaching Out to the Skeptics - Thomas H. Benton, Chronicle of Higher Education
Another major study has arrived—this time from the Department of Education confirming that online courses can be at least as effective in achieving measurable learning outcomes as traditional, face-to-face courses. At the same time, a study from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities shows that 70 percent of the 10,000 faculty members surveyed believe that online courses are either "inferior" or "somewhat inferior" to traditional ones. Professors who have taught online are more positive about the approach, but 48 percent of them are likewise convinced that online courses are not as good as face-to-face teaching.

While working on my M.A. in 2004-5 I took two online courses, my first. While I can see advantages of such courses, they lack the face-to-face energy and personal involvement of traditional courses.

One suggestion-- assuming this isn't now the norm-- is to allow each student to upload a recent photo of themself, ideally, viewable at the top of each post made during discussions. This will help make the course interactions more personal, adding to their reality, and to the feeling of connectedness of the students, no matter where they may be physically present.
