Online learning: A course for bird brains - The Salt Lake Tribune
Utah Symphony librarian Clovis Lark, a music scholar and good friend of Pierre Boulez, who was a student of Olivier Messiaen, has prepared a three-part online course to help Utah Symphony patrons learn about Messiaen's "Oiseaux exotiques (exotic birds)" before they attend the orchestra's Oct. 9-10 performances featuring pianist Jason Hardink. Lark promises to use photographs, anecdotes and videos to help students see "behind the composition" of this challenging piece into Messiaen's passion for the songs of various birds and the way he transposed them into music.
