What has been missing is a way for institutions to quickly and effectively integrate these external service offerings. At present, many external services require a separate username and password combination that is stored by the external service provider. Managing the creation and deletion of users, ensuring application access rights, and integrating the external services into the broader campus computing environment are all left to the institution. Worse, external service providers tend to differ in their approaches to these actions, requiring institutions to develop and maintain multiple methods as they add new external services to their offering.
