Gerald Ensley: An online university falls short of the ideal - Tallahassee.com
Suppose there were no colleges or universities. What would we do on Saturdays in the fall? That's one of the conundrums posed by a recent Washington Post column that advanced the belief that brick-and-mortar colleges and universities will be mostly replaced by online universities over the next few decades. The column is by Duke University visiting law professor and author Zephyr Teachout, who has been hailed as an online guru since serving as director of online organizing for Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign. Teachout's thesis is that online universities are more efficient and less expensive than traditional universities. Instead of hundreds of professors teaching the same basic sociology/biology/world civilization course in classrooms all over the nation, a handful of teachers could teach those courses online. Instead of a college education costing $100,000 or more, it could cost a few thousand dollars.
