Ivy League on your laptop - Maris Beck, The Age
The class begins with hoots and applause. The professor giggles as she pulls something from the hat box on her desk — not a rabbit, but something even better. "It's a little three-pound mass that I can hold in one hand," she says, "and yet it can conceive of a universe a billion light-years across." Renowned neuroscientist Marian Diamond is giving a lecture on the human brain at the University of California, Berkeley. Her students have paid up to $US14,000 ($A17,400) per semester for the privilege of attending. But thousands of kilometres away, others can watch for free on their home computers, through a recently launched website called Academic Earth.Academic Earth hosts more than 2500 free video lectures from the top universities in the US — Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the National Institutes of Health.
