University challenge - Kevin Feddy, Manchester Evening News
Alan Gilbert cut his teeth as a history lecturer at a fledgling university in Papua New Guinea.Now Prof Gilbert is leading a revolution of sorts at Manchester University, where he is president and vice chancellor. The university has a reputation as a centre of excellence when it comes to research and, under Prof Gilbert, it is transforming the 'student learning experience'. It has adopted a model used in the United States and at Oxford and Cambridge to 're-personalise' teaching away from big tutorial groups in favour of smaller ones and to offer more interactive, online learning programmes.
