As interest in distance learning in higher education continues to grow, the number of studies on providing effective learning environment for distance students increases. Drawing on learning theories which suggest that, for learning to take place students need to be actively involved in the learning process (Smart and Cappel, 2006), environments which enhance distance student involvement are explored. Active involvement in the learning process refers to “instructional activities involving students in doing things and thinking about what they are doing” (Bonwell and Eisen, 1991:5).
