The changing nature of society means higher education must adapt to serve the needs of a much wider section of the community than simply fresh-faced 18-year-olds. Alison Thomas talks to Christine King about how Britain's universities are rising to the challenge. The message that we need to gear up to cope with the globalised, technologically-savvy knowledge economy of the 21st century is reiterated so frequently that it is fast becoming a cliché.
