USU offers ASL classes via online learning - Logan Herald Journal
Utah State University now offers American Sign Language courses over the Web, thanks to a $25,000 gift from the AT&T Foundation. The money will go toward a new video conferencing system for the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. There is a national and statewide shortage of people with the skills to teach ASL and serve as interpreters, according to the Utah Deaf Center. There are currently only 74 qualified (master and intermediate) interpreters and more than 400 additional interpreters are needed. Administrators at USU hope that the new online ASL classes will help address the problem.
