Skidmore College eyes end to distance learning program - DREW KERR, Post-Star
A longstanding and popular distance learning program that graduated Skidmore College’s oldest student may soon be scrapped. The reason: time, money and increased competition. The University Without Walls program, an external baccalaureate program offered by the liberal arts college, loses hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, is increasingly taxing faculty members and is facing new competition from other online schools, school administrators say. The factors, they say, imperil the sustainability of the program, a combination of online courses and independent guided study that is geared toward adult students, including a 95-year-old who graduated in 2006. Though the program is not intended to be profitable, school administrators say they want to at least break even.
