At Parkland, other school districts, more students learning online - Andrew C. Martel, The Morning Call
In a computer lab at Parkland School District's Kratzer Elementary, 8-year-old Shaan Mehta sat before a computer screen, dragging images of cylinders, cones and pyramids into separate groups. It was pretty easy stuff, the second-grader said. His favorite subject is math, and he spends part of every day in front of the computer. In fact, he prefers learning from a computer to learning from books. On a computer, ''you have to read and you can type, and do other things with it,'' Shaan said. His school district understands how he feels. Over the years, Parkland elementary schools have shifted more learning time from the traditional classroom to the computer lab. In recent years, it has introduced an online learning program that rivals the textbook as the primary material.
