Distance learning increasingly popular - Hickory Daily Record Editorial
University officials think the jump in distance-education students is another sign of recession. Distance-education enrollment in the University of North Carolina system is up 20 percent. That translates into more than 22,000 students taking courses online or at off-campus satellite sites. Too, community college enrollment is up. University officials say the increased numbers aren't limited to high school graduates seeking to continue their education, but people who already have degrees or certificates.
