Economic crisis may hasten spread of telecommuting - Monroe Evening News (Michigan)
Today, more than 12 million employees telecommute or "telework" more than 8 hours a week, up from about 6 million in 2000, according to Gartner Dataquest, a firm tracks this sort of stuff. The number will hit nearly 14 million by 2009.... Many universities already are offering a version of it called distance-learning. At Monroe County Community College, for example, students take courses in construction management via an interactive link with instructors at Eastern Michigan University. Nuclear technology is taught via a similar link with Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. Many other professions could use technology to cut costs and improve productivity.
