When education meets technology - TABARE VAZQUEZ, President of Uruguay
In Uruguay -- a small nation in terms of territory and population, lacking in natural resources but rich in democratic traditions -- innovation and development are closely interconnected with equal opportunity and education.... As a result of these plans, poverty receded from 32 percent to 21 percent, and indigence from 3.9 percent to 1.4 percent. There is still much to be done, but we are improving. The project started in May 2007 and, from March 2008 to date, 150,000 XO OLPC laptops with Sugar interface have been delivered, having been acquired under a bidding process with multiple providers. By the end of next year, the allocation of a laptop to each of the almost 400,000 students and teachers in the 2,064 public schools in Uruguay (including special schools for different ability students) will have been completed. Students receive their own laptops, which they can use both in school and at home, thus opening up the possibility of extending computer use to their immediate family. In addition, through an enormous technical effort that places Uruguay at the connectivity forefront, the project progressively brings Internet access to schools, households, community centers, and public spaces.
