People turn to the 'Net to learn a new language - Elizabeth Howell, Canwest News Service
When Jim Wallace went to Central America to oversee the installation of stoves that his charity, the Guatemala Stove Project, helps provide for the Maya people, he found himself lacking a key tool: communication. He decided to learn Spanish. And part of his training came from an unlikely source - a website called Livemocha, which currently teaches the basics of several languages for free, though it may soon switch to a small subscription fee model. Wallace is part of a growing trend. Open information on the Internet has now spread far beyond Wikipedia to the realm of learning language, with free or low-pay sites emerging to compete with older classroom mainstays like Berlitz and Multi-Langues Services (MLS).
