College students always have an iPod within arm’s reach. They spend hours watching videos on YouTube, and send text messages and e-mails at a pace older folks can’t comprehend. Edison State College is saying: If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. So, professors are posting video and audio of their lectures on iTunes. Students are videotaping themselves giving speeches, then downloading them to YouTube. A photography class posts images on the photo sharing site Flickr.com, then students critique their classmates’ images. Although Edison offered its first online class in the mid-1990s, the college took online learning to a new level this semester with Edison Online, which allows students to complete an Associate in Arts degree without ever setting foot on campus.
