My Turn: Help online vision become reality - Frank Cioffi, Burlington Free Press
In June 2007, the state created the Vermont Telecommunications Authority. The VTA's mission is to ensure that every corner of Vermont has access to high-speed Internet, mobile data and cellular coverage by the end of 2010. As a tool for broad-based economic development and regional parity, the value of achieving this goal cannot be overstated. Relying on multiple tools and technologies, the VTA has announced a vision for achieving universal access.... In education, a universally accessible high-speed network will open doors to distance learning opportunities that could revolutionize education. Students can be provided with unprecedented access to curricula from around the state, and advanced students can get a head start on college classes. It is not acceptable that there are places in the state where these opportunities are still not viable.
