Primary and Nursery School Earns Technology Award - Funds Handheld Computers - Red Orbit
A primary school has landed a national award for its use of technology. Dean Bank Primary and Nursery School, in Ferryhill, is one of the first schools in the region to be awarded the ICT Mark from the British Education Communications and Technology Agency (Becta). The school has set up information and communication technology initiatives to enhance pupils' work and the school's administration. It received a [pounds]7,500 grant from the E Learning Foundation to launch one of its most innovative schemes. The money was put towards buying hand-held computers that youngsters use for homework, projects, monitored access to the internet, news updates and revision. Parents of selected year groups pay monthly instalments towards the rest of the cost of the devices, which pupils will be able to keep when they leave.
