Professors’ office hours are just one of the university mainstays going the way of the chalkboard as technology rewrites classroom rules of communication. “The days of the university professor getting up in front of the class for two hours are gone,” said Davis, who directs RMU’s Educational Technology Center. “Students are expecting much more interaction in the classroom and out of the classroom.” That means many professors are turning to PowerPoint presentations instead of written notes, podcasts instead of lectures and Webinars instead of discussion groups. While these technologies are by now commonplace in many businesses, some parts of higher education are only now working to integrate them successfully to keep students engaged.
