Virtual classes, real pay: Online learning courses help boost professors' salaries - Mackenzie Ryan, St. Cloud Times
On most nights after her two sons, ages 6 and 4, were asleep, Dara Michalski sat down and studied. The 37-year-old Utah resident and her husband, Steve, run a consulting business that helps families children with autism or related disorders set up home treatment. Wishing to further their services, the couple enrolled in an online master's degree program at St. Cloud State University.St. Cloud State's online course offerings and degrees have grown in recent years — fueled by the demand of nontraditional students like the Michalskis and on-campus students who want more flexibility. To offer more online courses amid tight and sometimes declining budgets, state universities have asked professors to take on more courses. An incentive in the faculty contract pays professors on a per-student, per-credit basis for teaching online courses beyond their full-time load. That additional pay is one of the factors helping to push a handful of faculty members into the ranks of the highest-paid state employees in Minnesota.
