North Carolina's higher education chiefs tout online offerings, seamless education in Gastonia - Neil Lineberger, Gaston Gazette
In the previous generation, a worker without a high school education had a 50-50 chance to make it into the middle class, Dr. Scott Ralls told Gaston Regional Chamber members Friday. In today's knowledge-based economy, the odds are stacked against a worker without a diploma. Ralls, president of the North Carolina Community College System, appeared at the chamber's First Friday Focus with Erskine Bowles, president of the University of North Carolina System, to talk about the importance of North Carolina's higher education to the state's economic development..... Bowles also said there will be more distance learning and online courses in the future, although the university system is already a leader in that field. "We have more online courses than the University of Phoenix, but we're the only ones who know it," he said. "I'd much rather have a degree from a real university than a virtual one."
