Inmate is off the streets, on the way to a better life thorough online learning - Bill Wichert, Express-Times
Derek McKinney is done chasing "microwave dreams." That's how he remembers life on the street, where living in the moment meant robbing somebody or selling drugs to get whatever he wanted.... Sitting behind bars a few blocks away from his teenage home, the 28-year-old father of five has now developed the patience of a student. "This is kind of a blessing in disguise A lot of doors are opening up and I'm opening them up myself," McKinney said. "Everybody wants what they can't have, but it's what you're willing to do to get there. That's the part of me that changed." As he awaits release through a state-approved parole plan, McKinney keeps studying and doing homework through the online learning program at Northampton Community College. After completing four courses within his first two years in prison, McKinney is currently exploring macroeconomics and philosophy.
