Skidmore to Close Online Learning University without Walls Program - MARC PARRY, Times Union
Skidmore College is moving to close its 37-year-old distance-learning program, leaving students around the country in the lurch. The college's University Without Walls program has about 130 students who are finishing, partly through online and independent-study courses, undergraduate degrees that were interrupted for various reasons. A top administrator recommended shutting down the program this month. Officials pointed to falling enrollment and rising competition from a burgeoning online distance-learning industry. Students are fighting Skidmore's plan. They've blitzed one administrator with e-mails and reached out to the media.
