One Million k/12 Students in Online Learning: Charter School Reaches into the Home - Eva-Marie Ayala, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Texas
Law sits at his dining room table in southwest Fort Worth reading about Hannibal's warrior elephants. Then he's at a nearby computer for his solfege warm-up, during which he sings notes prompted by hand signals on a DVD lesson. "So-so-mi-do," Ethan sings to the computer. Ethan, 9, is a third-grader in a charter school district based in the Houston area that offers free online classes to 720 students in grades three through eight. The district, Southwest Schools, runs Texas Virtual Academy, which provides certified teachers who track Ethan's progress and teach classes over the Web. Such online learning is a fast-growing trend nationwide, with nearly 1 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade taking classes through the Internet, according to the North American Council for Online Learning.
