Turning the page on traditional graduation - Star-Gazette Editorial
This is not your mom and dad's education. In 2008, learning comes in all kinds of packages, and if a new method accomplishes the same results, aren't education leaders obligated to consider it, debate it, try it out and see whether it works. Take online courses, for example. Have you ever taken one? Recall the dubious cries that came from traditional academicians when online learning college courses were first floated. Those questions lasted about as long as it took for students to start flooding college treasuries with registration and course fees for online learning. In 2006, according to Online Nation, 17.7 million people took online learning post-high school courses to get some kind of degree. That was about 20 percent of the total college course enrollment in 2007, or double what the proportion was in 2002. Colleges learned that as times changed, they needed to do the same in meeting student demands.
