New online learning programs clear students for takeoff - Andrew Moore, The Bend, Oregon Bulletin
With the rising cost of fuel, the aviation industry is facing another problem: a shortage of pilots. From commercial airlines to corporations with their own fleets, the demand for pilots continues to grow at a time when the military is training fewer of them, and many Vietnam-era aviators are nearing retirement, said John Miller, director of Central Oregon Community College’s aviation program.... But, he added, commercial airlines won’t even look at you unless you have a four-year degree. Recognizing the need, Miller negotiated with the Klamath Falls-based Oregon Institute of Technology to allow COCC’s aviation students to earn a bachelor’s degree online in operations management from OIT without leaving Bend. All courses, which began last week, are online learning and focus on management issues that have applications in aviation, such as fleet and pilot pool management, and specific aviation applications, such as firefighting.
