Phil Gerke usually gets to class around 10:30 or 11 at night. Once the kids have finished their homework and headed to bed, Gerke can start on his doctoral-level classes. In the living room.... While Gerke finished his undergraduate and master's degrees in education in a traditional classroom setting, his two years of doctoral work have been completed mostly through online classes. With a teaching assistantship, a job on campus, a wife and two young kids, the traditional approach to a doctorate in education simply wasn't going to work for him."Online offerings are expanding rapidly at most, if not all, public institutions. We've seen exponential growth over the last few years," said Linda Beene-Ballard, associate vice chancellor for continuing education at the University of Arkansas. "For a lot of people, this is the best, or the only, option for them to earn a degree or a certificate."
