Game plan set for Chinese courses - Jessie Ellis, Hometown Life
Next fall the South Lyon Schools will introduce a Chinese course that has already caused a stir. In June, the board of education voted to phase out French and phase in Mandarin Chinese.
The recent release of the course proposal for Chinese will expand the course offering to eighth graders as well as Freshmen through Seniors. "We're getting them started as early as our resources allow," said Jean Schmeichel, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. In his State of the County address in February, Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson challenged all of the school districts in Oakland County to make Mandarin Chinese part of their daily curriculum. So far, 14 of 28 school districts have stepped forward to implement some form of Chinese instruction from elementary to high school....One of the learning tools that is most exciting for administrators is an online learning component called Moodle. School board member George Elhert described Moodle as an on-line blackboard. Participants can post and read messages, post links to helpful web sites and discuss learning techniques.
