Charting a Wireless Course - JIM HWANG, Taiwan Review
WiMAX is essentially an upgrade of the Wi-Fi technology used for WiFly. The lesson in Taipei is that supply and demand are more critical than the type of technology used to build a network. For WiMAX, supply is not likely to be a problem given the enormous resources the government and its international and local private sector partners have been investing in research and development facilities and infrastructure construction. The M-Taiwan program seeks to generate demand in both public and private sectors. Public sector demand is focused mainly on government services and education--dubbed M-services and M-learning--that include traffic services, security surveillance and distance learning. To stimulate demand in the private sector, planners are emphasizing ubiquity as well as entertainment and banking applications. The M-Taiwan program aims to provide wireless access services to 8 million subscribers within three years.
