New Century Learning Consortium
I'm Ray Schroeder, Director of the Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning (OTEL) and a Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS). This is to introduce you to a project that my colleague, Burks Oakley, and I are beginning to implement. Burks is a Visiting Research Professor in OTEL, and from 1997 until earlier this year, directed the University of Illinois Online initiative.

We recently received an officer grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the purpose of this grant is to help develop what we are tentatively calling the "New Century Learning Consortium" (NCLC). As we envision it, the NCLC will assist with the implementation of high quality, large-scale online and blended learning programs at a limited number of small and mid-sized colleges and universities. This initiative will be targeted to institutions that have experienced decreases in their on-campus residential and commuter enrollments - institutions that would benefit from vigorous online and blended learning initiatives to expand their student base and stabilize enrollments. As the initial step in our Sloan Foundation-supported project, we are seeking to identify small and mid-sized institutions that:

1. have experienced enrollment decreases in recent years
2. offer online and/or blended courses but do not yet have large-scale online and blended programs
3. are willing to consider that vigorous expansion of their online and/or blended learning programs would be beneficial to the health of the institution

If you believe your institution fits these criteria and would be interested in participating in this project, please contact me:
