... Currently, such integration is piecemeal at best, driven by individual teachers who are intent on exploring ways in which ICT can improve the educational process. One of them is Donal O’Mahony, vice-principal of Portmarnock Community School. The north Dublin school is currently deploying a new virtual learning environment (VLE) based on open source system called Moodle. “As teachers and students what we’re looking to do is see whether we can improve our teaching and learning in a collaborative online learning environment,” explains O’Mahony, who grew interested Moodle while doing a Masters in E-learning at DCU last year. O’Mahony himself has used Moodle with his fifth year history class since last November. As a teacher, he feels he has become more “relevant and credible” because digital literacy is now something he shares with his students. The students have also benefited in a number of ways. If they lose class notes, they can simply log into Moodle and find a copy there. If they are out sick or away from school they can still join in on discussions over the internet. They are also, for the first time, having their work peer-reviewed by other students, something that the Department of Education is keen to encourage, notes O’Mahony.
