Local online courses recognized nationally - John I. Carney, Shelbyville Times-Gazette
Bedford County Schools' use of online courses has been profiled by the Arlington, Va.-based Center for Public Education in a story on its web site. Bedford County is one of only eight counties in the state participating in a pilot program called e4TN, which offers makeup work for students who need credits to graduate. A story by freelance writer Terrey Hatcher Quindlen of Hampstead, N.C., profiles the system's online learning efforts, featuring quotes from the school system's director of technology Joan Gray, school board member Amy Martin, supervisor of federal programs Connie Boutwell and e4TN site coordinator Betsy Norris. The story includes case studies such as a senior who needed to retake a geometry class in order to graduate while her terminally-ill mother was still living and a morbidly obese student who had trouble relating to peers but whose success has now enabled him to mentor others in the online program.
