Uganda: Universities Without Walls; the Cornerstone of Future Learning - Omar Kalinge Nnyago, Kampala Monitor
The university of the future will be a virtual learning community facilitated by technological developments. All students will have their own information technology (IT) bases in their own homes or very near their homes, providing individualised learning programmes managed by an elite group of teachers at satellite education centres. The speed of learning will be enormously enhanced with increased understanding of neural abilities, so time in front of the home computer will be minimal. Social learning opportunities will be provided to encourage "learning competition" and learning from one another where group work is vital (Thoday, 2003). Leadership and management of the future university will centre on a chief executive, possibly but not invariably, with educational experience. It will be more vital to understand the complexities of integrating large organisations rather than the simplicities of education. The key person will be a professional administrator rather than a seasoned educator. The vice chancellor or rector of the future will be a flexible problem solver, good at delegation and coordination, with full command of information and communication technologies.
