Students gain more online class options - Heather Woodward, The Olympian
South Sound's fastest-growing classrooms aren't inside school buildings. They're online. At least two Thurston County school districts plan to expand online learning programs this year. And a neighboring, statewide online K-8 school expects its enrollment to reach a new record this year. The K-8 Washington Virtual Academy (WAVA) is an outgrowth of the Steilacoom Historical School District's online school, which started three years ago and initially was open solely to students in or near the district. Last fall was the first time the academy opened to students across Washington. It started the school year with about 500 full-time students and enrolled three times as many throughout the school year, said Lark Moore, Steilacoom's finance director.
