‘Chinese courses making progress around Oakland - Jessie Ellis, Hometown Life
South Lyon schools won't have to go it alone when it comes to implementing Chinese. Schools throughout Oakland County have been busy making contacts in China, researching language learning tools and developing curriculum. Fourteen of 28 Oakland County school districts, including South Lyon, have agreed to implement a Chinese curriculum, Oakland County Executive, L. Brooks Patterson and Oakland Schools Superintendent Vickie Markavitch announced at a press conference on July 11.... "If we don't begin to understand China, we're going to be left behind," Patterson said.... In addition to classroom instruction, Oakland Schools are establishing an on-line Chinese learning program. Another technology-based learning opportunity includes working to connect Oakland County classrooms with classrooms in China for e-mail exchanges.
