Mic Deagle is one of the 30 million people worldwide who have chosen to take on Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. But unlike the 50,000 students from her native United States who are currently enrolled in Chinese courses in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country, she has decided to tackle Chinese single-handedly through self-study. “There is something extremely rewarding about overcoming an obstacle like that and learning on my own instead of at a school. Plus, it allows me to be flexible with my time and focus on what I want to learn.” And Mic contends that, with modern technology, she receives strong support. “I spend a lot of time online when I study. Without the internet, I’m not sure I could really learn anything and learn it the right way.”
