High schools offering online courses to seniors - Eileen FitzGerald, New Times
Bethel High School will offer online courses to its seniors next year, something New Fairfield High has done for several years. "It will give lots of opportunities for students to take a class that we are too small to offer,'' Bethel High School Assistant Principal Gary Lawler said Tuesday. "It really opens the door for them." A nationwide survey released this month reveals 700,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade took an online course in the 2005-06 school year. That includes fully online courses and blended courses, those that combine online learning with traditional face-to-face instruction. That's ten-fold the number in 2001, when an estimated 50,000 students took an online course. About 63 percent of school districts had at least one student taking a course and districts expected their online enrollments to increase.
