Web software baffles faculty, students - Seyed Jazayeri, University of Maryland Diamondback
A planned migration from online teaching software webCT to the Blackboard Academic Suite has lead to confusion among faculty and students who have become accustomed to webCT, which has been in use for nearly nine years. University officials inked a deal with software giant Blackboard Inc. last summer, and faculty who using webCT as a teaching aid are now undergoing training as preparation for a complete overhaul by this summer. But although professors using webCT for simple presentations such as course syllabi and lecture notes do not usually encounter difficulty, those using webCT's more advanced capabilities have found the transition challenging, said Janel Brennan-Tillmann, a technology coordinator at the School of Languages, Literature and Cultures. "WebCT was easy to use and navigate," said Jacob Zangrilli, a graduate student studying applied anthropology. "Blackboard looks less user-friendly."
