A typical school day for 17-year-old Jackie Lindsey begins around 8 a.m., when she helps her mother with chores and tends horses on the family's property. An hour later, the high school junior takes a seat in her living room with a laptop computer and signs online. ... "It definitely has its advantages, but it also has its disadvantages," she said. "The coursework is pretty hard. You don't get the face-to-face interaction with the teachers, so you're responsible for all that. The teacher's not there to remind you." But Diener's opinion of that interaction is different. "One of the things that often surprises people about online learning is that you actually do make better connections with your students because most of it becomes one on one," Diener said. "You're dealing with an individual's learning needs or questions one at a time instead of in a group of 30."
