Web-free library a strange occurrence 6- Lauren Stara, Whistler Question
Without question, the big story this week at the library has been the Internet blackout, which began during the storm on Thursday night and which may or may not be over by the time this column hits the stands. I have written in a previous column about how heavily the library’s staff and patrons rely on the Internet in a variety of ways. For staff, our access to online information has expanded our reference collection exponentially. Twenty years ago, if we had a question to which we didn’t have the answer on our local shelves, we were limited to a telephone request or even one sent through the post to a large institution like Vancouver Public Library or the UBC Reference Department. Now we can now use any of several extremely sophisticated search engines to find information from authoritative and reliable sources, quickly and efficiently.
