500,000 students’ intake target
During the 18th Convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) President Olusegun Obasanjo announced that a Presidential initiative to increase university intakes by 500,000 has taken off. According to him, the Federal Government planned to achieve this target by the end of the first quarter of 2007. In his words, “It is disheartening to note that less than three per cent of our youths have access to tertiary education as compared to 80 per cent in America, 35 per cent in Europe or 18 per cent in South Africa. To increase university admission opportunities among the youths a Presidential Technical Committee is currently working on the consolidation of polytechnics and colleges of education into campuses of proximate and contiguous universities. This exercise will provide additional 500,000 university admission opportunities. This is in addition to the open and distance learning mode of National Open University which is expected to admit about 100,000 students by the end of the first quarter of 2007”.
