From the Antarctic to Afghanistan, distance-learning students no longer need to feel isolated, says Tim Clark. The windswept coasts of south-west Cornwall have inspired poets and artists and pirates alike for centuries. Famed for its isolation, the craggy end of the UK, is hardly the place to find a university, let alone a student population. Yet unexpectedly, both here and in other remote areas of the UK a generation of students are being inspired by new techniques to promote discussion amongst distance learners. Surg Lt Cdr Matthew Turner, deputy principal medical officer at the Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Helston, Cornwall, is seven weeks into a diploma in practical dermatology at the Cardiff Universities School of Medicine. As a practising GP, Turner studies part-time from the base while working. However, far from being isolated, he joins an online course that demands its students talk to each other as part of their education.
