David Inserra has already sailed through every social-science course tiny Plumstead Christian Academy has to offer, but his senior year promises to be anything but boring. Instead of killing time in an elective he doesn't need, the driven 17-year-old is challenging himself to two Advanced Placement online courses - macroeconomics and microeconomics. As school doors swing open to welcome students back this week, many students will join Inserra in front of computer screens, supplementing traditional classes in bricks-and-mortar schools or taking entire course loads online. It's a booming trend, and one that allows small districts and schools like Plumstead Christian to compete with large, well-staffed public and wealthy private competitors.
