Why every Australian family needs the internet - Steve Burrell and Anna Patty, Sydney Morning Herald
The number of Australians connected to the internet expands rapidly every year and prices have fallen dramatically. Yet the gap between the information-rich and information-poor has grown bigger, not smaller. Those on higher incomes are leaving lower income earners and the poor behind. And in an increasingly wired world this unequal access can mean dramatic inequality of opportunity, particularly in education. Those on the wrong side of the digital divide face being marginalised as the internet becomes more dominant in how we work, buy, communicate and learn. Many private schools insist every student has a laptop computer, with lessons and homework conducted online. Educators are talking about the death of the conventional textbook and its replacement with exclusively online learning at schools and universities - leaving those not connected at home at a huge disadvantage.
