Lift barriers keeping adults from college diploma - Joseph Moore, Democrat and Chronicle
All across the country at this time of year, young adults are receiving their college degrees in return for four years (or more) of attending lectures, completing labs and internships, studying in the library and writing papers. But another type of student has worked equally hard to earn a degree, without the fanfare, and often against almost insurmountable odds — raising a family, juggling a job and sacrificing financially. These "adult learners," in their 30s and 40s, but also in their 50s on up, have returned to college to earn a degree to create better opportunities for themselves and their families. But they are the exceptions. Most adults can't overcome the barriers between them and a college degree. That's why we need to reduce the barriers.
