Invasion of the Pod People: Educators and businesses begin to bring podcasting to the marketing mix - Jennifer F. Delony, Business New Haven
If the term "podcasting" makes you think of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, you may just be too old to be reading this. Instead, wend your thinking forward 30 years to the movie Real Genius starring Val Kilmer. In it a tape recorder plays a lecture from a teacher's desk for an empty classroom, and the lecture is being recorded by tape recorders left by students on the classroom chairs. Fast-forward another 20 years: Imagine collegiate lecture halls equipped with automated capture and Web publishing systems that reproduce the classroom experience for any student with a digital media player. This may not be reality for every university today, but it is coming. "Podcast" is the popular term formed from the marriage of the iPod brand name and the word "broadcast" to denote any of several technologies that distribute audio files over the Internet. It is not necessary to own an iPod to listen to a podcast. Any hardware with the ability to play an audio file can play a podcast.
