Online classes stir up debate - Katie Highsmith, Dawndee Hudson and Amanda Turner, U Oklahoma Daily
Nearly 40 percent of respondents in the poll in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily classified online courses as either not credible or too easy. Despite this criticism, utilizing the Internet as an educational tool is a growing trend at OU and other universities. OU initially offered five online courses in spring 2001 and has 80 scheduled for spring 2006. In addition to these online classes, many traditional courses use the Internet as a communication tool, using platforms such as BlackBoard and Desire2Learn. Michael G. Moore, founding director of the American Center for Study of Distance Education, said more than 75 percent of American colleges and universities use the Internet as a teaching tool in some form.
